Short to Medium Layered Bob

Q&A with style creator, Ruth Tedmori
Hairstylist @ Union Salon South in Pasadena, LA

How would you describe this look?

This hairstyle is a bold statement, a mix of anime and street chic. It is a long razored pixie with round layers at the crown and a long bang with disconnected sides.

One of my favorite thing about this cut is how seamless it appears when in reality there’s a lot of disconnection happening. Also, that drop in length is special. It’s not every day you get that much length in the front, sometimes not even on long hairstyles, because hair gets finer near the front hairline.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Things to consider for this look are length, density, and texture. You need enough length to make a bold statement with the front. Density plays a big role in this cut because it will determine the approach you take in creating the shape. My client’s hair is thick so it was cut like a pixie because I wanted a leaner shape. For someone with less density, I would probably cut it like a layered bob.

This cut would be best worn straight and wavy. This is a high maintenance style, so I would only recommend this style to someone who has the time for their hair and wears a good amount of hair product. We used a volumizing spray at the root, a heat protector creme in the mid-shafts through ends for blow drying, then pomade and a texturizing spray to finish. Also, I would talk to my client about what the in-salon maintenance would be and what the grow out would look like. It’s definitely for someone wanting to have fun with their hair.

We Love Short Hairstyles Like this Updo!

How would you describe this look?

This updo was an easy and fun look done on a bridesmaid. It is a very relaxed and romantic look. I like that it’s easy on the eyes because every strand of hair just flows. It seems to sit loosely around the bridesmaid’s face, giving her a “laid-back” feel, without taking away her beauty and the romantic theme of this style.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Some of the things I take into consideration when styling short hair for a special occasion is the color and texture of the hair. Because this particular woman has color treated blonde hair, it was rather easier to work with. Color-treated blondes (people who lighten their hair to achieve blonde) tend to have a certain hair texture due to the hair lightening process. The texture may seem a little tougher and may feel drier than virgin hair, and this actually adds more volume and helps hold the style longer. I would have had more trouble achieving this style on somebody with short virgin hair because the hair would have been softer. In that case, I would have chosen a hair product that adds texture to the hair before beginning the hairstyle.

The color of this hair also adds dimension to the style which really brings out all of the movement you are seeing. All in all, this was a great look picked by the bridesmaid herself!

Shattered Bob

Q&A with style creator, Holly Painter
Owner / Hairstylist @ The Prissy Hippie Beauty Shop in South Hill, VA

How would you describe this look?

This look is a short and fun shattered bob. I painted her roots darker to give her the lived-in look that’s so popular right now.

I love it because it’s low maintenance and can be worn several different ways!

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is great for fine tresses because it really shows off the texture.

To achieve this wave, I used a 1 1/4-inch curling iron and did vertical curls in opposite directions for that lived-in, messy feel. I used Brazilian Blowout Thermal Root Spray for a good bump at the base, which is awesome for fine hair. Kenra Texturizing Taffy was used to piece out her ends and emphasize the shattered layers.

Messy Inverted Bob

Q&A with style creator, Tabitha Fredrichs
Master Stylist @ Christopher J Salon in Plymouth, MN

How would you describe this look?

This inverted messy bob is for the fine-haired gal who wants a little easy and a sassy short look. I always cut the hair dry to see the natural movement of the hair.

My favorite thing to see is bounce and movement in fine, short texturized hair.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This style can work on all face shapes, you just have to vary the front length to achieve the desired look.

Products are key for fine hair and my favorites are Full Mousse and Full Dry Blast from the Living Proof Full line. Apply the mousse at the roots and blow dry the hair up and out as full as you can. Your tailored bob should do the rest.

If you want extra texture and sass, spray Dry Blast at the roots and give it a shake. Your hair is how you feel!

Modern Angled Bob

Q&A with style creator, Diana D’Alessandro
Stylist @ Versai Salon in Woodbridge, ON

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as a modern take on a classic angled bob cut. This cut is perfect for someone who has fine hair and really wants to create body and volume.

My favorite thing about this look is the shape. I love how even though there is a drastic angle, the waves give it a soft and airy feel.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Just go for it! This is a really easy care style. With just a little bit of volumizing mousse and a small round brush, you can create a lot of body with very little effort. I also finished this style with loose waves that are easy to do with a flat iron or large barrel curling iron.

This look is prefect for anyone with a smaller face as the longer pieces up front and the soft side fringe really frame the features.

Classic Textured Bob

Q&A with style creator, Carrie Manning
Owner / Stylist @ V.C. & Company Salon in Bluffton, SC

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as a classic textured bob. This client has incredibly fine thin hair and loves the texture that this cut provides. She wore her hair long for years in fear that if she cut it shorter it would be difficult to style. She is actually able to blow dry and go which works great for her busy lifestyle.

Her color was achieved by using Kenra Lightener with 20 volume and a ton of foils. I toned her with the new Rapid Toner PV for five minutes.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This hairstyle is incredibly versatile, which is precisely why it is one of my favorites. Depending on the face shape, sometimes I will leave the length an inch or two below jawline. If the face is round or if they have more of an oval shape, I can let that weight come right at the chin.

This is a great cut for almost everyone that wants a simple, classy, no fuss style and has straight hair. My go-to products to create this look are Kenra Volume Mousse and Kenra 13 Hairspray. She is able to re-style throughout the week with Kenra Dry Shampoo because it gives her just the right amount of texture without weighing down her fine hair.

Mature Short Shag

A casual and choppy look that compliments fine straight hair on an old woman over 40. A shaggy cut for the mature woman!

Q&A with style creator, Erin Skulnick
Hairstylist @ Lillian James Salon & Permanent Make-up Artist @ A NuReflection in Turnersville, NJ

How would you describe this look?

This haircut has a little bit of a rocker vibe.

My favorite thing about it is when she wears it up with her bangs and some pieces around her face down, she will look more boho and free. It’s very versatile.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Bangs can be tricky, so make sure you’re ready to commit to styling them almost every day. I used a few products from the R+Co line to give her fullness and texture.

I don’t just go by face shape. If you want bangs, get them! There are so many variations of bangs, so everyone can be happy.

I specifically chose this color and cut to work with her fine hair. She can have so much fun with it. Look at her, she’s already rocking it!

Feminine & Sassy Pixie

Q&A with style creator, April Jackson
Hairstylist @ South Shore Studio in Kihei, HI

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as anything but meek, but also a super feminine look for short fine hair. My favorite thing about it is how soft the lines are within the cut, and in the color placement as well.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look will take some effort, especially because the hair is fine in texture. Lifestyle is definitely a factor!

Volumizing is a must, and that comes with proper use of the right product combined with heat to get the lift. Finishing requires texture powder at the roots and a firm, pliable wax to shape and hold. Face shape and color placement are automatically incorporated into the cut.

Whoever wears this look won’t be sitting in the corner! My guest wearing this look is a bartender here on Maui.

Rose Gold Wavy Textured Bob

Q&A with style creator, Erin Cardoza
Colorist @ To Dye For in Modesto, CA

How would you describe this look?

This is a wavy textured bob with a shadowed root and dimensional rose gold hair color tones. I love how this look can be both edgy and elegant and that it is still appropriate for the client’s workplace!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Rose gold tones work best on warm to neutral skin tones. This look can easily be achieved as long as the client has little to no color build up. These tones tend to fade out really fast, so it&rsquos important to invest in a good sulfate-free shampoo, a hydrating mask to use weekly and make sure to wash in cold water.

Your color will pop more when you add a little curl to your hair. I recommend using an oil like the light Moroccan oil on your ends first. Use a 1-inch barrel curling iron, curling from the root and leaving the ends out. Finish with Unite Texturiza texture spray to add body and playable hold to your hair!

Neck Length Blunt Bob

Q&A with style creator, Kim Deverall
Master Stylist @ JCPenney Salon in St. George, UT

How would you describe this look?

I like to describe this look as a sultry and tousled. It looks unkempt while still looking uniform and put together.

I love this style because it literally works with any hair type.

Any advice for someone considering it?

My advice for this style is to add VOLUME. Whether your locks are coarse or baby soft, you need volume. Building and layering the right products for your hair is crucial.

I like to start with Redken’s Pillow Proof Primer to speed up drying time while adding heat protection. You do not want to damage your already fragile fine hair. I rough dry to about 80% dry and finish off with a round brush while overdirecting the roots. You can also blow dry in the opposite direction of growth with the Wet Brush Speed Dry to increase body.

Once dry, I spray Redken Guts at the roots and blow dry with a brush for added texture and oomph. The next step is curling with either a 1-inch or 1 1/4-inch Hot Tools curling iron, alternating the direction of the curls to create the unkempt but uniform waves.

Once curled, I use a dry shampoo at the roots and tousled down into the ends. I love TIGI Dirty Secret dry shampoo. It adds texture but doesn’t feel gritty. It also creates volume, texture, and some hold while stretching out your hairstyle another day or two.

Taking the Wet Brush Speed Dry Brush, I lightly rake through the curls to soften and blend them while distributing the dry shampoo from root to ends. I finish up with a flexible hold hairspray like Matrix High Amplify or Big Sexy Spray and Play.

This look is great for someone who likes texture, body, and low maintenance. The style can go with any face shape, but your cut should be tailored to fit your face shape without too many layers.

Versatile Layered Pixie

Easy to manage short layered hairstyles for fine hair are one of the more popular requests and this casual look is perfect for it.

Q&A with style creator, Raijona Boyd
Salon Owner / Hairstylist @ Serenity Hair Studio in Newark, NJ

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a layered pixie that can be worn by women with various hair types, but especially women with fine textured hair.

My favorite thing about this cut is that it’s very versatile and can be worn several ways to camouflage hair that is thinning by wearing a loose curl or by simply curling the hair upright to give more texture.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

After shampooing the hair, set it in a straight or circular mold with setting lotion or a foam mousse. Place the client under the hair dryer for about 30 minutes, depending on the client’s hair texture. After drying, the hair is then combed out and sprayed with a small amount of dry oil mist to give the hair some shine.

Lightly spray the hair with a texture hairspray, then curl the hair with a 1 1/2-inch flat iron. I often choose to finger comb and style my client’s hair to the desired look and then she is ready to go.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

All textures are welcomed for this cut and style. Clients with a round or oval face can easily achieve this style and pull it off wonderfully because the cut allows the clients to still keep length in the crown and front bang area of the hair.

This cut can be worn by the everyday woman because this style can take a woman from the boardroom to the nightclub and still look very chic and sexy.

Modern Short Wedge

If you don’t want to get a super short look but want a current style, try this cute wedge bob. If you are over 50 and have mid to short grey hair, then consider adding caramel highlights to get a younger look.t

Q&A with style creator, Amy Robinson
Cosmetologist and Platform Artist @ Absolutely You Salon in Tipton, IN

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is all about the modern woman. It is a very versatile look.

You can have your daytime look of a classic stacked bob for work, and for the night you could have a deep side part with shaved side for an edgy look. If you’re feeling a little alternative, you can even slick it back into a braided mohawk.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend Big Sexy Hair shampoo and conditioner as your foundation. Layer on Sexy Hair Full Bloom for fullness and density. Your hair will have such an amazing fragrance every time you flip or move your hair for 24 hours!

Finish with Big Sexy Hair Powder Play Light, or if you want an extra bit of pow in your style, style with the original Powder Play. With all of these products, your hair will still be soft and touchable. but with all day volume.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for anyone with fine or thick hair that is straight or wavy.

The face shape that would fit it best is oval or heart, but can really fit any face shape as long as you take the jawline into consideration.

I love how this haircut because whether it’s a classic look you’re looking for or a little edgy, it will fit whatever your mood and personality is for the day.

Rooted Blonde Lob

Q&A with style creator, Holly Painter
Hairstylist @ The Prissy Hippie Beauty Shop in South Hill, VA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a lived-in rooted blonde lob. I love it because it grows out very nicely and has lots of dimension.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I colored her base with a dark blonde and balayaged her ends to brighten it up, then glossed her to lock in shine and make the blonde pop.

I used a 1 1/4-inch curling iron to create the waves. To give it more texture, I sprayed a dry texture spray and finished with a shine spritz.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This is a great look for someone who likes low maintenance color. The cut works really well for clients with some natural texture to their hair and medium thickness.

Long A-Line Bob

Q&A with style creator, Jennifer Needre Garfagna
Independent Stylist / Color Specialist / Make-up Artist in Cape Cod, MA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a long a-line bob, otherwise known as the lob. It is a very modern look with a bit of edge that is flattering on women of all ages.

My favorite thing about the lob is that it is so easy to maintain for women with a variety of lifestyles. Whether she is a stay at home mom, an executive woman or perhaps someone in fitness, it works for everyone. It’s long enough to still put up, yet short enough to give fullness to those with fine, thin hair.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Fine hair is very easily weighed down by product. A light and airy texturizing spray is the perfect fit as it can be layered on the hair without being too heavy or giving the hair a tacky feel. My favorite products are Amika Texture Spray and Redken Wind Blown Spray because they are both aerosol and very light.

If I were to recommend any other product it would be a heat protectant to be used prior to heat styling as fine hair is more prone to breakage. One product that is great for fine hair is Kenra Ultra Lightweight Blow Dry Mist. It is also excellent for frizzy hair and cuts blow dry time in half!

To easily recreate this look, I suggest a heat wand. Just wrap hair around the wand (starting at the base of the hair for added body), hold for about five seconds and let the hair fall. Switch the direction of the wrapping ever so often. Once hair is cool, spray texturizing spray all over and run fingers through the hair. Don’t be afraid to tousle it a bit for the ideal lived-in lob!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

The a-line bob is perfect for fine-haired clients who struggle with trying to be modern yet age appropriate or even trendy. This look is very pretty on women with a strong features or women with fine hair and a round face to give the illusion of more structure in the face.

It is the most versatile and classic look to date, which is why even women with thick hair are asking for this as well!

Edgy Short Layered Bob

This short layered bob is great if you have short fine hair but lots of it. It’s the perfect funky look for women with a personality to fit it.

Q&A with style creator, Millette Adams
Licensed Cosmetologist @ Just Hair Salon in Las Vegas, NV

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would say this look is edgy and it really fits her personality. She did her own color at home over the silver color I gave her during the summer. When it grew out and faded, the result is this metallic mauve with a shadow root. I thought that was a pretty cool “accident”, and I put that into play for the cut. I love how it came together!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I try to use minimal products on her fine hair. While her hair was damp, I used Lanza Trauma Treatment mainly on the ends. She has some damage, as you can see. I sprayed a little Redken Pillow Proof for protection, then blow dried away from the scalp for volume.

I lightly flat ironed her hair on low heat for a more sleek look. We added a little pomade for the strays and finished the look with a very lightweight, quick drying hairspray from Redken.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I feel like anyone can wear this hairstyle. I love a good angled bob in all lengths and textures. It may not be “wash and go” for everyone. Most may have to work harder in achieving the desired style. It’s really up to the person how much time they’re willing to commit to styling their hair.

Just remember that if you have a wider/rounder face to leave more length in the front (below the chin) to elongate. Other than that, have fun with your hair! Play with it and have an open mind. You never know when your next new hairstyle will be your best one yet.

Blonde Wispy Bob

Acacia Cronic for Elon Salon, Elon Salon, Marietta, GA

A fun, slightly longer on one side bo b is great for finer textures of hair. Add in a few little longer layers and you can create so many dazzling styles.

How To Style:

  1. After shampooing with a volumizing shampoo and conditioner, apply a volumizing mousse through your ends and work up into your scalp area.
  2. Blow dry turning ends under with a medium to large round brush. Hold top layers straight up when drying them, smoothing them over your round brush.  Roll the round brush down to your scalp and remove heat to let it cool for a few seconds before removing. This helps to set the curl and volume in.
  3. Finish with your favorite lightweight hairspray.

Recommended Products:

Matrix has a great Rose volumizing regime of shampoo, conditioner and mousse.  It’s lightweight, gives great volume, and won’t build up on your fine hair.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Square, round and heart shaped faces wear this style beautifully, while hair that is fine and can be a little longer is best for recreating this style.

A-Line Bob

Style by Jerry Oliver, Cloud 9 Salon, Martins Ferry, OH

Stacks or graduations give hair “wash and wear” volume. The short hair on the bottom pushes the longer hair on top. It is also shorter in the back and longer in the front. This makes hair like this in the back push hair forward, giving instant volume to thin to fine hair.

How To Style:

  1. Apply your favorite styling product to wet hair.
  2. Blow dry while lifting sections of hair 90-180 degrees off the scalp.
  3. Once the section is dry, from the angle you’ve been blow drying it, roll the round brush into the hair and hold it for a few seconds.
  4. Once all sections are dry, set with a finishing spray.

Recommended Products:

Extra-Body Sculpting Foam is a volumizing mousse that adds body to hair.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
